A dear friend of mine recently left the city for good to live in her hometown near the mountains. More than a friend, she was a mentor and confident. I felt I needed to repay her with a gift that came naturally to me, so I drew her a painting that wasn’t even my style of art. She is Nepali and has a giant dragon on her back. She has taught me spirituality and intuition and that is what I wanted my painting to reflect.
It is a story of a young asian woman, with a phoenix tattoo to symbolize a new birth/beginning, since she has left everything and gone to her home land. She also holds the world of fate in her hands. I felt this story needed to be shared since this is one of the purest and most zen like paintings I have ever made.

Patrick Nagel’s stark vectors of the same woman in high profile fashion had influenced me even before I started graphic designing. I remember coming across his work in an old 1997 clip art CD. I was so mesmerized by his style that I started mimicking his sketches. Its only 8 years later that I realized the same effect can be made using softwares like illustrator and PS, which he so effortlessly inked by hand. Truly a pop icon in his own right. Its clear that his work has inspired the fashion designers, artists and graphic artists of yester years as well as today.
If you are into design, please take some time to read up on him and his work.
A brief intro on him:
The Pop Art of Patrick Nagel needs little introduction. His minimalist style defined an era with cool, seductive women that became the most iconic of any single generation. His elegant graphic work and his portrayal of the contemporary woman made figurative design before him look instantly old.
Things that made me happy this week:
1) Framed butterflies from thailand
2) A Betty Boop hard drive
3) My dad’s old pentax
4) A book on the best design houses in India.
5) My new Windows phone
PS: I am just loving the hard drive. Who said they need to be boring black or silver. Jazz it up with a vinyl sticker like I did to give it some personality
really happy to see my packaging design after a long time.
Surfaces 3 & 4: winter evening - softness and book.
(the lovely box comes from Poplin, whose beautiful Grace pyjamas I got for Christmas)

Turns out celebrities have better websites than the designers who designed them. I am completely blown away by the web efforts from the Beyonce and Jim Carrey websites. Beautiful and thoughtful, theses sites have really inspired me to start looking at web design on a deeper level.
